Where Do You Get Your Comfort
Talk about comfort and heartache.
We as Born Again Christians have a source of comfort; it comes from God’s word. We all say we believe that but I believe we know it instead. We have a knowledge of it, but we don’t believe it. We practice what we believe, so what we do, tells others what kind of a Christian we are. Just because we are knowledgeable of a fact doesn’t do anything for us, just as knowing that Jesus died to pay mans’ sin debt, does not get us to heaven. It tells us in John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
That word believeth means to rely upon. Many people know it, but don’t rely upon it. Just like that, many people are knowledgeable of the fact that God is our comfort, but are not relying on it, making it of no effect.
Where do you get your comfort? 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
What do you do with that comfort? Do you suck it up, and selfishly put it away, or do you share it with others. If God was a comfort to you, and we are supposed to be like God, then we are to comfort those around us and quit being so greedy. But they don’t deserve comfort; neither did you. You ought to be a comfort, to those that you know don’t like you, because if you can do that, then you wouldn’t have a problem doing it for someone you like. Remember what Jesus told Peter in Luke 22:31-32 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
If you had to get someone to pray for you; would you rather have me pray for you, or Jesus? When we are going through it, Jesus prays for you and I. Now I can rejoice about that.
Do you get your comfort from the world? Jobs friends came to comfort him, and look how that worked out. But when God got through with him, he was on top of the world. The world offers people a false hope, void of reality. Job 21:34 How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood?
The world will tell you exactly what they think you want to hear, or they will tell you what sounds logical. The world offers hope in drugs, alcohol, sex, “prescribed medication”, dancing, and any other distraction they can.
That is why the world pushes life in the fast lane. Because they don’t want you to slow down and listen to the still small voice of God.
And by the way, the only way that God is going to speak to you and comfort you, is through the word of God. He isn’t going to speak to you through a song, or a movie, or through your conscience, or any other way. He only speaks through the word of God. (preferably the King James Version) Any comfort given to you by a person should be backed up by the Bible.
Psalms 71:21 Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side.
The Lord gives true lasting comfort. Psalms 94:19 In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.
God is our comfort in life and in death Psalms 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
In affliction He comforts me Psalms 119:50 This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.
Matthew 9:22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.
Who is it that comforts us? John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Oh spread the tidings 'round, wherever man is found
Wherever human hearts and human woes abound
Let every Christian tongue proclaim the joyful sound
The Comforter has come
The Comforter has come, the Comforter has come
The Holy Ghost from Heaven, the Father's promise given
Oh spread the tidings 'round, wherever man is found
The Comforter has come
Time and time again in the Bible, we are told of the Comforter. God didn’t leave you here so you could be miserable; He wants you to be happy. So He left us a comforter.
