The Comforts of God
There was a missionary to the Indians who went by to check on a certain
group of Indians. The chief asked the man how great was God’s love for them. He
called the name of a body of water in the area and asked; can you imagine
something twice as big as this place? Yes, replied the chief. Can you imagine a
place three times the size? I believe so, came the answer. Can you imagine
something one hundred times the size? The chief’s eyes opened widely as he
said; that’s too much for me. And when I try to think of the love of God, I
have to say with the chief, “that’s too much for me.” I can say with surety, God loves us way more
than we love Him.
Have you ever been afflicted by life? Has life ever served you lemons? Have you ever sat there, and said like the psalmist “no man cared for my soul”? If so, then listen up, and I may give you something from God’s Word to rejoice over. There is a song that goes like this.
Does Jesus care when my heart is pained
Too deeply for mirth or song,
As the burdens press, and the cares distress,
And the way grows weary and long?
Oh, yes, He cares, I know He cares,
His heart is touched with my grief;
When the days are weary, the long nights dreary,
I know my Savior cares.
It tells us in Hebrews 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. You ever been around someone who is critical? Nothing is ever right. If only I had a nicer home, of if I just had a little more money, I would be happy. I would be happy if it weren’t for so and so. I could be happy if I had a godly wife. Don’t ask them how they feel because they might tell you. And if God takes care of their complaints, they have a back-up list in reserve. And if we listen real careful, we might notice that we always think that we are the only ones going through it, and nobody else cares or understands. You ever been there? I have, and let me tell you it is a depressing place to be.
Remember Elijah who had just performed one of the greatest feats on earth, then finds himself on the run for his life. He starts complaining thinking nobody cares and got depressed Depression often comes after a great spiritual victory. Elijah had just defeated the prophets of Baal, and one heifer named Jezebel threatened to kill him, so he runs for his life. When he quit running he starts focusing on himself and his problems, and he gets depressed. In the woe is me stage, he says he is the only one that loves God. Yet God said in 1 Kings 19:18 Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him. And when you and I get depressed the first thing the devil says is “nobody cares”. There are those who have been there before you, and there will be more to follow. God needs you to stand firm trust God knows about it. And when the next person goes through it, you will be able to show them how God delivered you. That is why Jesus told Peter in Luke 22:31-32 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. When you get depressed just remember what God says in Psalms 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. So to stop you from getting depressed he tells us, Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
In good times I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
In bad times I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
When I understand what’s going on I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
When I don’t know what’s going on I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
When I have no troubles I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
When I have more troubles than I can shake a stick at I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
When I am walking close to God I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
When I am so far from Him that I can’t see His face I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
When I’m happy I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
When I’m sad I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Now if you can’t get comfort from that, you might need to get saved.
Let’s review. God said don’t hang around critical people.
Don’t become a critical person
Be happy with what you have
Be content with your lot in life
Because He has said; “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
