Stubbornness
Psalms 32:8-10 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee. Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about.
Both horses and mules are common in more ways than one. They are both from the same family, as we can obviously see from looking at them but one thing stands out. Most are just plain stubborn; thus the saying stubborn as a mule. However horses can be just as stubborn as a mule. I rode an Appalachian once that was WAY more stubborn than a mule. If you turned him with all your might you might get him turned in an acre of land. I got so mad at him I almost pulled a Blazing Saddles on him, and punched him right in the face. A stubborn hose is way worse than a stubborn mule.
Remember the story of Balaam? He had a stubborn donkey, and it was so cantankerous that Balaam beat it until it talked. Now even I have never got that mad at one before.
We put a bit in their mouths to force them to go where we want them to go. It applies pressure, making them hurt; so they turn, not because they want to, but because they don’t want to deal with the pain. They are too stubborn to do, out of obedience. But sometimes you have an animal that you never have to pull on the bit. You just touch the side of his neck with the bridle, and he will go where you wish; the difference being stubbornness, and the fact that he loves what he is doing, and who he is doing it with. Do we? Now God instructs us to be as the horse that doesn’t have to be in pain to do as he is told, but does it because he loves his owner.
God says I can either guide you with a gentle hand, which He prefers, or I can chastise you till you do what I want. God does not take pleasure in chastisement but we are sometimes so stubborn that He doesn’t have much choice.
There are three things we know to be true about Cajuns. They are proud, they are stubborn, and they are proud about being stubborn. It is true what the Bible tells us in Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? Stubbornness is wicked; it isn’t anything to be proud of. Remember, pride is what got satan kicked out of heaven. So let’s talk about stubbornness today.
First let me say stubbornness hinders God’s plan for us.
God has a will for my life and yours. He wants us to walk in the right way; the way of instruction and conviction. He wants us to desire to make Him happy. He doesn’t want us to go around walking on egg shells , trying to appease an angry God. I saw a video telling how Obama has spen $774,000,000 of taxpayers’ money to rebuild and refurbish mosques across the world. He claims that by doing so he is deterring the enemy not to attack us, however the head of the enemy forces know better, who said that the US is only trying to appease us. This comes from the mouth of the heathen. God gives us instruction through His Word, how we are suppose to live if we love Him and want His blessings, and He gives guidance through the Holy Spirit of God, living in us. By the way, if you don’t have Him inside of you, then you can’t make Him happy.
Sin takes us away from His will, darkens our eyes to His word, and hardens our hearts to His Holy Spirit.
Sin will take you farther than you want to go
Slowly, but wholly taking control
Sin will leave you longer than you want to stay
Sin will cost you far more than you want to pay
Stubbornness corrupts the power of the soul
The horse and the mule are two good examples of stubbornness. God uses these beasts to show us that sometimes we have to be taught and led. But men swell up with arrogance and pride. Proverbs 6:16-17 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look… The stubborn beast will have to be forced in the right direction, but God doesn’t want to force us, He would rather that we do it because we love Him.
The man that stubbornly refuses God’s guidance and leadership will come near to danger. Then for some strange reason he gets mad at God, like it is His fault. If you are carrying a closed umbrella in a rain storm, don’t get man when you get wet. The power of God is in our obedience to His Word and His guiding hand. Without that power, we will be corrupted and destroyed.
Stubbornness is against our best interest.
Man needs peace and fellowship with God, but willful stubbornness will lead us away from such a blessing. Did you bless your kids, or did your parents bless you when you were rebellious? Why should God? It is in our best interest to rise and not to fall, to live nobly and not sinfully, and to serve God out of love and not fear. When we consider the goodness of God, it should draw us to Him.
Romans 2:4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
When we do not yield to Him we are led to trouble and disaster.
How foolish it is for man to bring trouble to himself because he will not yield to the teaching and leadershipof a great and loving God.
