Burdens of Life
What is a burden? Webster tells us this. That which is borne with labor or difficulty; that which is grievous, wearisome or oppressive.
Every one of us has burdens in life. Do we not? Now you are going to think I lost my mind. We need burdens to come into our lives because it draws us closer to God and it gives us a vision. We have a burden to see someone saved so we have a vision of getting others in heaven, etc… Proverbs 29:18 tells us where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
One day a man named Ronnie Frederick had a burden for the people of Ascension Parish. Because of that burden, he had a vision of starting a church which would help them grow in the things of Christ. Thus St Amant Baptist Church was born. Because of that I was born again. That is why we have burdens.
When you say I can’t handle this anymore, you lie on God because God says in Psalms 103:14 For He knoweth our frame; He remembereth that we are dust.
When we become burdened with something, it weighs on our hearts. We then go to God in prayer and pray over it. This makes God smile. Did your children ever come to you when they had a problem and ask for help or advice? Did you like that or did you tell them to go figure it out on your own, or do it yourself? Did it make you feel good that they came to you for help or advice? Do you think that maybe God enjoys it when we come to Him for help or advice? We having sins nature are a wicked selfish people and care about ole #1. So God will let things and people come into our life to care about, so we can quit thinking of us for a while. If you spend all your time thinking about you, you will be miserable. That is why I always say, if you have problems, go help someone else who has problems. Why? Because you can only think about one thing at a time, and if you are concerned about others, then you don’t have time to think about you. Also God tells us in Galatians 6:2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
Many of the burdens that we carry with us are given to us by God. They are used to mold us into the image of Christ. We find in Acts 15:28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;
The word Christian means Christ like and if we are going to be like Christ, then we are going to have to be concerned with others. The only reason Jesus left heaven was for others. I love the words to the song
“OTHERS”
Lord, help me live from day to day
In such a self-forgetful way,
That even when I kneel to pray,
My prayer shall be for "Others"
"Others" Lord, yes, "Others"
Let this my motto be,
Help me live for others
That I may live for Thee.
But do we live, and pray for others? It is said that intercessory prayer is one of the fewest to be prayed. There is a woman at the nursing home named Beverly. She is all alone, has few family that come and visit her. So what does she do? Instead of having a pity party for herself, she goes around and finds ways to do for others. Nothing is above or beneath her. She is also one of the happiest people I know, because she keeps herself too busy to think about her own problems.
Often times we think God will take away our burdens if we go to Him, and we do for a while and then we quit because “God didn’t take away my burdens.” God never said that he would take them away. He says in Psalms 55:22 Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and He shall sustain thee. (not take them away) He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
We love to sing the old hymn Burdens are lifted at Calvary, Calvary, Calvary.
Burdens are lifted at Calvary. Jesus is very near. But remember, they are lightened not taken away. God said you bring me your burden and we will get in the yoke together. It says in Matthew 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
A yoke is a device made for two or more, to get them working together because two or more are stronger than one. That is why in a tug-of-war there are usually five or more people with the same goal in mind, pulling together. A yoke keeps everybody going in the same direction. And if you don’t want to go in the direction of Christ, then you have trouble. When we get get in the yoke with Jesus, He will keep us on that straight and narrow road that leadeth unto life.
Now I was blind for about 3 years; I was burdened. I lost my mom to the death angel; I was burdened. I have friends and loved ones who if they don’t get saved will burn in hell forever; I am burdened. I have friends with health problems, and physical and spiritual needs; I am burdened.
Now any one of those things alone are enough to make me depressed, so I took them to the Lord, and I got in His yoke, which is made for two, and He helps carry them, and they are easier to carry. What happens when two people work together to carry something or pull something? The bigger of the two takes the blunt of the weight. Jesus is way bigger than us, so when we get in the yoke with Him, He takes the heaviest part, making my part bearable.
(sing) Cast your care on Jesus today
Bring your worries and fear
Burdens are lightened at Calvary
Jesus is very near
Burdens are lightened at Calvary, Calvary, Calvary
Burdens are lightened at Calvary
Jesus is very near
Now let’s go out and help lighten someone else’s load this week.
