Only One
In this world today one doesn’t sound like much. It is a lonely number, and its power seems to be lacking. It is good for picking your nose, or hitching a ride, or communicating something mean. But in Christianity, one is a very important number, and that is what I will talk about this morning.
Only one sin will take a person to hell.
Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
In the garden of Eden, after Eve was deceived, Adam made a choice to disobey God, and sin came into the world. And may I say, before we start accusing Adam for disobeying God, that we look at ourselves. We disobey God every day. We have victory over the power of sin, but not the penalty of sin. What does that mean? It means that you have the choice of whether to sin or not. 1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. That means you sin just as much as you want to sin. That means that you are not as good a Christian as so and so because you chose not to be. If you are here today, and have been born again, then you have the power to choose not to sin, just like Adam did in the Garden of Eden.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
My grandpa and grandma hat fruit trees in Brittany. There were two particular trees that I remember, one produced only one plum. I don’t know why, except God knew I was going to need this illustration later in my life. Another tree was loaded down with plums. Both were plum trees regardless of how many plums were on it. But our sin is like that tree which was loaded down. We sin repeatedly, which causes others to be infected. Our sin doesn’t just affect us, it affects those we love as well.
How many sins make up a sin? One. So how many sins does it take to go to hell? One.
Only one sin sent the Savior.
1 Timothy 2:5-6 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
What is a ransom? When someone is held ransom what is it. It is something given in exchange for someone else. Well satan was holding me for ransom and God exchanged his Son to free me from my captor.
Only one payment was enough.
If I go to a store when I today and buy a shotgun. I pay the cashier, take it, and go my way. Next week when I go in to buy a case of shells, am I going to have to pay for that shotgun again? No, it is already paid for, and the law says I only have to pay for it once. I think maybe God is as honest as the law makers in this country.
Hebrews 7:27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.
That is what He meant when He was on the cross, when he said “it is finished”. I know some people that think they have to get saved over and over again. They think that just because they keep sinning after they get saved that they lose their salvation and have to get saved again. That is the lie of the devil. The Bible says in John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
The word everlasting has no end. It doesn’t mean until I sin again. Also John 10:27-30 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand. My Father, which gave them Me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of My Father's hand. I and My Father are one.
Do you really think that you are stronger than God? One did, and his eternity, along with a third of the angels ever created are forever doomed for hell.
