Dagon vs God
Let’s talk about a great story in the Bible today
Let’s talk about Dagon. You ever hear of him? It was the Philistine god of fertility. They worshiped this false god, even to the point of bowing down to it and worshiping it. You say that is horrible. No more so than what we worship today, but I’ll talk a little more about that later. He was fish from the waist down, and he was human from the waist up. He was the god of fertility and crops. The Philistines bowed down to, and worshiped its image (kinda like the cross is today) Why do people today; saved and unsaved alike worship the cross. The cross was nothing more than a means of capital punishment, just like the guillotine, electric chair, gas chambers, and more. Yet Christians and non Christians alike hang them on the walls, and wear them around their necks. Would you wear a guillotine around your neck? The Bible still tells us in Exodus 20:4-5 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; Do you hate God? Now the Ark of the Covenant was to be carried by man (not beast) wherever it went. When it would stop the pillar of cloud would rest upon it, and when God would want them to move, the cloud would move toward the direction that He wanted them to go. There was protection by God when they followed God, but when they left the protection of God, they were on there on. If a man was threatened of his life, but the police agreed to protect him, I would think he would be pretty grateful and do what they told him to do and go where they told him to go. I would think if they told him to stay away from a certain place, he would do it and be safe. But suppose that he did what the police told him not to do, and he went where the police told him not to go. Then he would lose that hedge of protection. Now if he did, would it be the police fault if he got hurt. If he put his hand in the guillotine and released the blade, would it be the fault of the police? We wouldn’t expect that he should blame the police, yet when we against God’s will do what He tells us not to do, and go where He tells us not to go, and we get hurt, why then do we blame God? It seems that we need to get back to having the same standards all the time. God’s standard is Jesus, so I think we should consider having Him as our standard too.
The children of Israel did well in battle as long as the Ark went first, because they followed the will of God, the man of God, and the Word of God. They went to Ai without the Ark of the Covenant and were brutally defeated. They said they are just a few people, we can handle it. We don’t need God, we will just leave Him here, and if we need Him, we’ll call for Him. They used God like a lucky rabbit’s foot; kinda like Christians do today. Now they are going into battle against the Philistines and the Ark was not before them. So they sent for the Ark, and when it came everyone shouted. You see they got their lucky rabbits foot back, their four leaf clover. “Ok enemy we have the Ark back, now roll over and play dead.” But that didn’t happen. Just like the Philistines weren’t impressed with the Ark of the Covenant, the world is not impressed with you either. You don’t need to be proud because you went to church or because you didn’t sin as much as so and so. You can believe that satan in not impressed with you. I use to tell people I wasn’t afraid of demons; till I met one. You know it wasn’t impressed with the fact that I am on my way to heaven. Just like the Philistines, he will attack you full force, and will destroy you. You need to get in your prayer closet, and pray for God’s power and protection from the devil. So the Philistines stole the Ark out of the camp of the Israelites. They put it in the temple with their god Dagon. They thought for sure “we have the #1 and #2 in our possession, we can beat anyone now.” It didn’t go like they planned. We read in 1 Samuel 5:1-7 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod. When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon. And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again. And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him. Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day. But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof. And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god. Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. So what gods do we have in the world, even in the USA today.
Religion, money, statues, ourselves. Those aren’t gods. They are too. Anything that you put before God is your god. Some think they are going to heaven because they go to church. They are putting church ahead of God’s perfect blood sacrifice, much like Cain did. When I was in Texas, I was witnessing to this one woman who told me,” I don’t care what the Bible says, I’m going to heaven.” She stands firm on her god. How many people refuse to get saved because they don’t need God? Money health and good fortune are their gods. There is ONLY one true God. He is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. These three are one. So go ahead and serve your gods, but just like Dagon one day you too will bow before a Holy God. Philippians 2:10-11 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
