The Peace of God
I went to Mexico with some friends, and we went to a place called Horseshoe Falls. It was a beautiful sight, to see the waterfalls. You don’t typically think of water-falls in Mexico, but none the less they were there. And as I stood below watching the waterfall, like a hoard of swine that Jesus allowed the demon legion to go into, I noticed something in the side of the mountains. There was a small ledge where beautiful flowers were growing. And I thought, how that was a picture of the life of a Christian. As we go through this world of torment and trouble, God stills has a ledge of beauty that we can find refreshing. Peace in the midst of our storm. Though it seems the world around you is crashing, you can have peace in the midst of it. John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. Why should I be of good cheer if I am having tribulation? First of all, I should be of good cheer, simply because God said to be. Next I should be of good cheer because God is going to use it for somebody’s good. And lastly because it will help us to grow. When I was a lot younger than I am right now, I use to work out with weights. I would take large amounts of weights, and lift them as often as I could. It wasn’t always fun but I did it anyhow. The muscles in my body would tear, and the scar tissue would add more muscle to the damaged area allowing me to get stronger and stronger. And when I go through tribulations, God is allowing my spiritual muscles to be ripped, so I can grow stronger in the Lord. Then I can handle more and more in my spiritual life. But just like I didn’t start of by lifting 200 pounds, God will not give me more than what will help me to grow.
The Lord promises to give peace to His own. Psalms 29:11 The LORD will give strength unto His people; the LORD will bless His people with peace.
If you are here today without Christ then you are not promised peace, and if you find it, it shall be temporal at best. Kind of like my diabetes. I have two different kinds of shots that I take. Aspart which is only effective for two hours; I take it before each meal and it brings me to a safe level, and Lantis which is long lasting. It keeps my level safe for an extended period of time. The person who has never trusted Christ as their Savior is like the Aspart, only experiencing temporary peace now and again. Those who have trusted Christ as their Savior can have the Lantis which is long lasting. The sad truth is that many Born Again Christians choose the Aspart over the Lantis, choosing to live in fear and worry instead of in peace and contentment. Their life song instead of “Why Worry When You Can Pray” is “Why Should I Pray When I Can Worry” Because the choice is mine whether to use Lantis, Aspart, or neither. I can either trust God, or trust me. Dumb is the person that trusts themselves instead of God.
He gives peace to those who love His law. Psalms 119:165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.
“That love thy law” That means those that read it daily, and does what it says. You say you love God’s Word but you go day after day, and never read it. And if you read it, you don’t do what it says. You want to be like a sponge soaking up water, but you don’t want it to get wet. However, when you read and practice His Word you don’t get offended when the preacher preaches it. “Why who does that preacher think he is?” God? You show your ignorance. It isn’t who the preacher thinks he is, it’s who God knows that we are. We are OK with hard preaching until the preacher preaches on our sin. You go around getting mad at everybody because you don’t have any peace. You don’t love God like you want everyone to believe you do. You lie when you sing the song “Oh how I love Jesus.” You better get off that road that you are on; the end of it is heartache and despair.
Peace is the legacy of God and He offers it to all His children. John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
The world, yea sometimes even Christians can’t understand it. Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Would you like to have that peace that passeth all understanding? First, you must be born again. Second, Read His word daily. And thirdly, do what it says. And the God of peace shall give you peace in the midst of the storm.
